• Welcome!

”Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle

Welcome! This is my personal website/blog dedicated to following me on my Renaissance journey. If forced I would primarily identify myself as a visual Artist, but I am also passionate about languages, music, chess, martial arts, Go, science, writing, philosophy, new technology, and the battle against ignorance and pseudoscience. The Art on display in the galleries is all of my work, and the opinions you will read are my own (as are any errors – feel free to point them out 😉

The past year has been incredibly busy from a creative perspective, but a number of other passions have suffered as a result. I’m looking to rectify that once I gel a better schedule for myself. My competitive pursuits in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Chess have laid somewhat dormant for the last 6 months or so, it’s time to wake them.

The plan is to compete a few times in 2016 in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Chess, and to book a venue for next fall to hold a solo Art show. I will be engaging in different fund raising initiatives to help this. If you have any leads in this area you can contact me – robert@bentleyartist.com

If you’d like to work on a project together, or purchase original Art – send me a message.

You can see the full gallery by visiting here

Follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook:

This year I will be taking on larger Art projects, participating in exhibitions (working on plans for a solo show), as well as competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Chess, and GO tournaments. To support this I’m selling a number of my original drawings (see the galleries posted below). The price of the signed original drawings, as well as its title, description, and size can be found with the image itself.

If there are other ways in which you would like to support the aforementioned projects (through sponsorship, donation, or publicity etc), you can contact me by email.

  • The One Question Anti-GMO Activists Refuse to Answer

I’ve been in this debate and on the side of the overwhelming scientific consensus for a little while now. I’ve talked about all of the different arguments from the number of studies, what scientific consensus means, food “monopolies”, the toxicology of different pest control methods, and the nefarious methods used by the Organic food industry to spread fear and misinformation. All of that can be read here – but this little post is about one specific question that they refuse to answer.

It’s also a question that can be a good measure of whether or not a position or opinion is rational or irrational. If its merits are based in scientific reasoning or some form of superstitious hocus pocus.

The question is “What would it take to change your mind?” or “What evidence could be supplied that would convince you of the opposite of what you believe now?”

  • Reclaiming Beauty From Beauty Culture?

I have a lot of experience examining, depicting, and studying beauty but very little experience dealing with the ravages of “beauty culture”. I do however see the devastating effects it has had and can have on all of the women in my life.

I say “all” because so far, to this day, I haven’t met a single woman who doesn’t have body image issues. From friends, family and acquaintances to the many wonderful models I’ve had the privilege of drawing. Not a single one has escaped the assault on something that is unfortunately also linked culturally to their sense of self-worth. Some have had a better time dealing with this fight than others (whether it’s because of their personality, how closely they fit into “conventional” beauty stereotypes, or a number of other influences besides) – but so far every single one of them struggles with it on some level.

  • Black Lives Matter Is More Important Than Your Latte

I cannot possibly fathom the internal emotional dialogue that justified everyone losing their minds over Yusra Khogali (Black Lives Matter Toronto Co-Founder) tweeting the following:

“Plz Allah give me strength to not cuss/kill these men and white folks out here today. Plz plz plz.”

    1. It’s twitter. Almost by definition these are the unfiltered thoughts of its users 99% of the time. A defining representation of a person’s thoughts it is not.
    2. I’ve literally heard worse vitriol in the line-up at Starbucks from people annoyed at a misspelling of their name or error in creating their Vanilla Bullshit Cappa something or-other.
    3. It is obvious that she didn’t actually want to kill or cuss anyone. We have coffee mugs, t-shirts, posters, memes, and countless other examples where we ask for the strength not to strangle the shit out of the next annoying customer, person asking a dumb question, someone taking our wine, or anyone talking to us before we’ve had our morning coffee.
    4. If we can empathize with someone expressing frustration at being cut off in traffic, getting bad customer service, or losing a game of scrabble…surely we can extend that to someone expressing frustration at living with systemic racism.

Like fucking seriously though. This is tone policing at its worst. If someone doesn’t have the exact same basic human rights and privileges as someone else, we shouldn’t make them beg for it politely. We should all say something more along the lines of “Well fuck – sorry – oh my god that’s super shitty. Here is that thing that I have that you don’t but you should totally have. Totally understand why you’re angry. Also – how can we make sure this doesn’t happen again etc.” Instead we’re saying “Simmer down. You need to exhibit greater internal fortitude and emotional control than I do when the woman at the drive through window gets my order wrong and be sure to use carefully selected and polite language so that your request for these things I currently enjoy isn’t misinterpreted because I won’t give it to you then and I’ll say you don’t deserve it anyway.”

Her response to the controversy and the overblown reaction of the general public and media can be read here – but it’s disheartening that there even needed to be a response in the first place. Perhaps the only good thing to come out of this is to highlight another element of systemic racism. People were more concerned over the polite behavior of an advocate than they were the legitimate grievances thousands of Canadians have to deal with on a daily basis.

If you’re not totally blind and can accept that there is still a problem with racism in general, and that there is also a racism problem with law enforcement; then please for the love of god be a reasonable human and extend just the tiniest amount of empathy towards someone who has had to live through this their whole life, focus on helping in the struggle, and not let your own hurt (and I must say – incredibly fragile) feelings block your view of a very important message.

#BlackLivesMatter is more important than your Latte, so treat it as such.

  • GMO Truth & REAL Corporate Conspiracy

GMO Truth & the REAL Corporate Conspiracy

Although a somewhat complicated topic I will try to be as succinct as I can addressing all of the scientific arguments before detailing what the real corporate conspiracy is. This whole post is organized into three very important parts:

    1. The scientific truth about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs from now on)
    2. The real corporate conspiracy surrounding this topic
    3. The genuine human cost in lives and years lost to the campaign of misinformation.

The truth about GMO foods is that they are as safe to eat as any other produce, that there is nothing inherently dangerous about modern genetic modification practices, and that the scientific consensus on their safety is actually greater than what we have on anthropogenic climate change. There is very, very little disagreement among biologists and scientists who study genes as to their safety, and the ambiguity or apparent controversy on the subject is due to a number of features (which I will get to later).

  • There Is NO Cancer Cure Conspiracy

For You “Cancer Cure Conspiracy” Nuts

I can’t express how exceedingly stupid you need to be to believe that the Illuminati, or “Rich People”, or the “Secret Lizard Empire” are hiding a cancer cure from the public, just so some monolithic evil entity known as “Big Pharma” can continue to squeeze money out of treatment. That you’re making your silly faces shown again during the most recent passing of beloved performers makes your hideously malformed ideas even more repugnant.

You spit on the efforts of tens of thousands of health care workers (oncologists, nurses, researchers, students) passionately spending decades of their life tracking down these elusive killers by declaring your degrees from “Google University” and “ conspiracynutjobtheoriesilluminaticonfirmed.com “ outweigh their decades of effort doing…well…actual fucking research.

When I hear your words escaping that toothy vent in your face like so much putrefied effluent, I am reminded of this
